The recent discovery of the team of Jeffrey Lawb, the director of the neurosetroster from the University of Illinois in Chicago (USA), may be the key to unraveling the emergence of a myth about turning people into living dead. Lawb experimentally proved that with the death of the main part of the body the human brain does not die. On the contrary, it is death that provokes the unprecedented activity of structures that scientists dubbed “zombies”.
At the disposal of Lawb there was equipment for the fastest analysis of brain tissue after gathering, up to activity at the genetic level. His team equipped a laboratory where it was possible to store samples at room temperature, simulating the opening conditions, and take as many samples for constant monitoring of changes. Finally, sufficiently biomaterials from volunteer patients were prepared, for example, epileptics that underwent surgery on the brain to reduce seizures.
During the experiment, processes were studied in the 24-hour period, which showed that most of the brain tissue did not change. In addition to a narrow group of glial cells, for which the unprecedented expression of genes and the increased activity of the cells themselves was noted. They belong to the immune system and primarily respond to brain injuries. The peak of activity fell 12 hours after death, the activity of the cells did not fade up to 24 hours.
Lawb makes a cautious conclusion that scientists should reconsider their approaches to studying brain tissue and be prepared to detect new anomalies in its genetic and cellular activity. This does not mean that the living dead exist, but the very fact of awakening part of the brain in response to the death of the body itself puzzles. Especially as a possible reaction to direct damage to the brain itself or a blow to the head, which makes you think – and what is actually death and how it affects our biological bodies?
