This week, Qualcomm has officially announced the new Snapdragon 855 mobile eight-core processor for top-end Android smartphones, but the manufacturer did not immediately disclose all the details. As it turned out, not in vain. Despite the declared expansion of the functionality, some innovations were not so transparent and obvious.
For example, the Snapdragon X50 modem with support for 5G networks is not an integral part of the Snapdragon 855. Inside the processor, only the Snapdragon X24 modem with 4G LTE support and data transfer speed to 2 GB/s is located. The novelty is a separate microcircuit, and each manufacturer can decide whether to add to the flagship products the support of the new cellular standard or not. Thus, more affordable versions of smartphones on a fresh top platform without 5G support and the most advanced options for the same device may appear on the market.
Another moment, in the Snapdragon 855 there is no separate unit of neural calculations (NPU) for working with AI, virtual, as well as supplemented by realities. All assigned tasks from these spheres will host a graphic accelerator and auxiliary chip Hexagon 690. This method of distribution and work in Qualcomm was called the 4th generation of the AI Engine engine. According to the developer’s statements, its capacity in two exceeds the capabilities of the Snapdragon 845 and is equal to 7 TOPS.
All other statements of Qualcomm were reliable. The 8-core Snapdragon 855 is built using a 7-nanometer technology and three Kryo 485 nuclei clusters (one core with a clock frequency of 2.84 GHz, three by 2.42 GHz and four with a frequency of 1.78 GHz). This construction of the system increased productivity to 45% compared to last year’s Snapdragon 845. Inside the single -critical platform, in addition to the Snapdragon X24 modem, there are a graphic chip ADreno 640, a processor of image processing SPECTRA 380 and Hexagon 690.
The chip supports the use of RAM LPDDR4X with a frequency of 2133 MHz, a single camera with a resolution of 48 megapixels or double with a 22 megapixel sensors, fast charging Quick Charge 4+, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6 with MIMO technology, ultrasonic dactyloscopic sensor Qualcomm 3d Sonic Sensor, Qualcomm AptX Adaptive and Qualcomm Truewireless Stereo Plus, Virtual Reality and HDR Vidorolists In 4K at 60 f/s. In addition, smartphones with Snapdragon 855 will be able to create a portrait mode not only when photographing, but also when recording video clips with a moving frame. Also, flagships with a new top chip will be able to use the technology inherent in the latest iPhone. Heif or image format with high efficiency, will squeeze photos to half the size of the usual JPEG, without losing the quality of the photo.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip will allow smartphone manufacturers to use several voice assistants. He supports Google Assistant, Alexa, Bixby, Baidu Dueros and much more. Qualcomm also uses AI to combat echo and background noise that can interfere with voice teams.
The new Snapdragon 855 function, called Cinema Core, will give 7 times greater energy savings when watching videos from services such as Amazon Video.
The new ADreno 640 graphic processor has performance 30% faster, which will launch HDR games. As a video viewing function, HDR makes images more realistic. Qualcomm says that HDR games on smartphones will have more than a billion shades of colors. For VR Snapdragon 855 it provides exciting 8K resolutions at 120 frames per second.
Commercial deliveries of Snapdragon 855 manufacturers of devices are scheduled for the beginning of the first half of 2019.
